I love sports. It's a lifelong love. I grew up a Laker fan living near Seattle, Washington. Yeah, I was that committed to my team. These days I find myself rooting on the GS Warriors. I love my Seahawks, but I hold a special place in my heart for the Broncos, Packers and Redskins. I guess I'm just a fan period, NCAA, NFL, NBA, NHL.... if there is a game on TV that will take precedence over anything else. Okay, back to this yoga thing.
My yoga journey began in 2003 when I was introduced to yoga as part of a workplace wellness program. I was looking to gain back my health and flexibility by exploring this growing cultural phenomenon. I immediately saw the benefits and once or twice a week at the company gym during my lunch hour just wasn’t enough. Fortunately a local studio was right around the corner from my house.
Over the years I was content to attend classes – ducking in and out when I felt life permitted it. After attending a retreat in 2012 I knew I needed to commit myself to deepen my knowledge and practice. I looked into the teacher training program but my personal life felt too chaotic and overwhelming to take on such a task. The following year my teacher approached me and encouraged me to think about joining an upcoming session beginning in January 2013. Life was just as out of control as it was the prior year, but I threw caution to the wind and trusted my instincts - this was a journey that I needed to embark on.
Even after completing my 500 hour certification I feel as if I have just dipped my toe in the ocean of yoga. Yoga education is something you begin - there is no ending. Students become your daily teachers and inspiration. Your practice evolves and every day brings a new observance and discovery about the human body.
I've been blessed with amazing teachers - here in Simi Valley and elsewhere. I've been with Yoga Nook and Jeni Winterburn since my foray into the yoga world and Jeni's extensive knowledge of human anatomy and Hanna somatics have given me a solid foundation to further my own practice and teachings.
I love my continuing studies with Gwen Lawrence's Power Yoga for Athletes techniques. I feel Gwen has done amazing work integrating yoga into athletes' lives. Working with high school and college athletes over the past few years has been very rewarding and I intend to continue to move my teaching practice in this direction.
It’s exciting to be able to combine my lifelong passion for sports (basketball and football most notably), knowledge of the repetitive movements associated with the players’ individual positions and be able to design a targeted yoga practice that promotes their physical and mental well-being.
WHAT STUDENTS SAY?
"Wish I could have started earlier. Yoga with Kim helped me change the way I moved by making me aware of the muscles involved in my repetitive motions. My ability to jump higher increased too."
"At first I really didn't feel any difference, but after a few classes my back pain began to get better and learned what was causing it!"
